Being an undercover princess on the run from your family can be difficult – but being all those things PLUS being beautiful and having a major secret practically makes you a target for bad things happening.  Sepora is the last known Forger – her body creates and expels spectorium, a priceless liquid that can be made into materials for building, used in creating power, as well as a number of other things that make life run more smoothly.  But she’s tired of Forging for her father, the King of Serubel, who keeps her locked away from everyone so they don’t know she is the source of the precious substance.  And when she threatens to stop Forging for him, he locks her away in the dungeon – but her mother takes pity on her and assists her in escaping, while faking her death.  She doesn’t care where she’s able to run to, as long as it away from her power hungry father.  So she runs…

Being a prince not ready for his time to rule, but forced to be prepared upon his father’s untimely death from a mystery disease that kills with utter swiftness and is making its way through the kingdom of Theoria – hitting both old and young, male and female alike.  For Tarik, the now King of Theoria, his main concern is finding a cure for what is now called the Quiet Plague, and when Sepora ends up captured, sold into his harem, and demands to speak with him – from the moment he meets her realizes she is special in some way.  While he doesn’t realize her to be the presumed dead Princess of Serbel, he also knows that there is something about her – from the way she speaks to him, to the way she treats others.  That is partly due to the fact that Tarik is a Lingot, meaning her can distinguish a truth from a lie, and while Sepora learns how to speak with the intent of truth-telling, Tarik knows that while she is very special, she’s had a hard yet pampered path.  Throughout their trials together, the two begin to feel things for each other – but the fact that Tarik must marry a royal, but will love her is not something Sepora is willing to live with.  And while it’s found out that spectorium is at least a temporary fix for those with the Quiet Plague, never fully trusting Tarik and his intent leads Sepora on an emotional journey – one that could end up leading her right back into danger.  But it’s not a clear matter of right or wrong for Sepora, but rather of what is right for HER – meaning she makes a promise that no one will use her for her Forging powers, unless she deems them worth of such a gift (as she’s been used for it by her father for so long who does not use it for good most of the time).

While I’m not usually into more “historical” pieces (the whole story had a pharaoh mixed with the Middle Ages type feel), I loved everything about who Sepora was and the courage she had to find and make a new life for herself.  She was tough, intelligent, but still full of grace and clever words – enough so to make her way from runaway young lady, to captive, to the King’s harem, to the King’s Advisor’s attendant.  And Tarik, while smart, strong, and handsome, he still knows nothing when it comes to matters of the heart – but he wants to do right by his kingdom and its people, even if that means marrying a women he does not love – when the one he eventually does is in front of his face.  I thought the story was brilliantly written in a split POV between Sepora and Tarik, and their perspectives were important to the entire book.  I know Ms. Banks must have some amazing words up her sleeve to try to outdo the first part of Sepora and Tarik’s story, but I will try to keep my hopes low so she can blow me away once again!

When 17 year old Piper losses her mother to a horrible tragedy, her elusive grandmother, whom she’s never met, requests the summer with her and her little brother TJ on an island off the New England coast.  But when Piper and TJ arrive, they never could have prepared themselves for the huge and elaborate home that their grandmother lives in.  With Piper’s standoffish attitude and feelings for her grandmother, she keeps to herself and tries not to enjoy the lavish lifestyle, still in mourning over the loss of her mother and best-friend.  While in her shell of solitude, Piper wanders around the coastal town and meets Zoe, who is bubbly and outgoing.  She invites Piper to a bonfire, where she proceeds to meet Zoe’s three brothers, Zack – Zoe’s twin brother, Zander – the oldest Hunter sibling, and Zane – dark, brooding, and a complete jerk toward Piper.  But of course Piper feels a strange pull toward Zane and his obnoxious attitude, even though she knows she shouldn’t want to be talk to him…or see him…or dream of him.

When Piper starts feeling like she is being watched and Zane keeps popping in out of nowhere to intervene when she faces anything/one threatening, she begins to look for answers as to why people call her grandmother The White Raven, why Zane keeps calling her Princess, and why he and others have seemingly “invisible” tattoos that she can see, but others can’t…and why everyone keeps referring to her as a “Raven”.  With the on again, off again sparks she feels from Zane, when the eldest Hunter, Zander asks her out, she gladly accepts – he is literally just the tall, dark, and handsome to give her a little fun, but then Zane shows up and puts Piper’s life into a real tail spin.  And when he delivers the news that his father is THE Grim Reaper – that he is the son of death – and Piper is from the long line of powerful reapers known as banshee or a White Raven.  Zane tells her that she has the power to take a soul with one touch.  As her fascination with Zane grows, so does the danger she is in, as well as the information that she finally learns about her heritage – that her grandmother has an enormous amount of power, her mother didn’t want the reaper life for her (which is why she left Raven Hallow when she was pregnant with Piper), and that Piper is now next in line to be THE White Raven, “Queen” of all the reapers.  And not only that, but Piper also finds out that she is betrothed to Zander to unite the two most powerful families…falling for Zane shouldn’t have been a part of the deal.  But with danger waiting around every corner, Zane Hunter’s lips looking more kissable by the minute, and  her impending marriage to the other Hunter brother – Piper’s life is about to get more complicated than she could ever imagine.

Let me start of by saying I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK!!  I thought that Piper’s character was well developed, she knew how to stand on her own two feet, but was still willing to trust and rely on others.  She was strong, funny, and even without knowing it, completely kickass!  Which leads me to Zane…hmm, how to describe him with his hard abs, kissable lips, and dark hair (ha!) – Piper gives us some pretty good imagery throughout as she falls hopelessly in love with him.  I thought that their banter was amazing, and even though their journey is far from over, it’s apparent that they are a team, bound by their souls in an amazing ride of love, life, death and all those things encompass.  Great series so far – can’t wait to see more butt kicking and lip locking for Piper and Zane!

The team of Elementals is back and ready for some answers.  With their teacher Darius leading the way, Nicole, Blake, Kate, Chris, and Danielle begin practicing and honing their Elemental skills – and keeping their town safe from monsters that have escaped from Kerberos, the prison the Olympians locked them into after the Second Rebellion.  As tension rise among the team, as do feelings between Nicole and Blake – but they have to keep those feelings hidden so they don’t upset the balance of the team, more specifically, Danielle.  But when they come up with a plan to find out just how the monsters are escaping, catching and questioning one of them, tensions run even higher.

Now that they’ve figured out a temporary fix using the Books of Shadows, the adventure really begins – in Greece and the Aegean Sea.  They must retrieve three things: the seed of the lotus fruit, the milk from the sacred immortal cattle of Helios, and the blood of a slain hydra.  The only problem is that they ALL come with some kind of obstacle – the lotus fruit turns you into a glorified hippie, the immortal cattle don’t produce milk, and the hydra, well, it’s a hydra – with 5 different heads, poisonous breath and bite – not to mention that if you try killing it by beheading it, two more heads grown back in the one’s place.  With nothing more than their magic and the weapons Blake (the fire elemental) created, they set off to create the only thing that could help them get and keep a hold on the escaping monsters until they can figure out how to permanently close the portal to Kerberos forever.  With a few new friends they meet along the way, does the Elemental team have what it takes to complete this frightening mission?

One thing I love about the first two books so far is that they start with action and it doesn’t seem to stop throughout the entire story.  Nicole and Blake’s crush on each other grows, Kate proves that just because she can “only” control plates, she is a complete bad ass, and we already knew that Danielle and Chris has amazing power and confidence.  This story is very imaginative, while still giving the reader a glimpse into the actual Greek mythology.  I also think that it’s great that the story is super interesting, has a lot of action, but keeps it clean as far as the relationships are concerned.  This series would be perfect for anyone from 6th grade and up – and while an imagination is also necessary, Ms. Madow does a great job of painting a great portrait of her characters and the settings.

Eila and her crew of Mortis/ own personal superheros is back and kicking more butt than ever.  With Raef, Kian, MJ, and Ana back by her side, with a few other loyalist added into the mix, they are ready to take their fight to where it could all end or begin – given the weapons that could be created and used against her and her misfit friends.  I really enjoyed leaning more about Eila’s heritage and being shown the risks and rewards that she feels are necessary to restore her once great race to it’s former glory.  With some bumps along her long road to self-discovery, Eila has her ever-present love Raef to help her navigate the twists and turns that are thrown her way.  If you are looking for just another sci-fi story, this might not be for you – this story has so much more!  It has intrigue, betrayal, romance, strange alien races (with strange powers to shock and awe), friendship, and loyalty.  I will be eagerly awaiting the next and final chapter in Eila’s journey!!

When high school junior Nicole Cassidy moves from her small town in Georgia with her family to Boston, Massachusetts, she is anything but happy.  Moving schools, leaving friends, and all she’d ever known was not what she had foreseen for herself.  And when she’s thrown into all of the honors classes at her new school, she is confused and further frustrated by the move. However, what she experiences from the moment she steps foot into her first class of the day is anything but normal or boring…especially when the teacher makes things appear out of thin air onto the chalkboard without so much as a wave of his hand.  Nicole discovers that she is anything but ordinary – in fact she is a witch, no wand needed.  With as much disbelief as she initially feels, the pieces start to fit into place that she is “different”.  And when she sees Blake Carter, she immediately feels a connection with him – accept for the fact that he has a gorgeous girlfriend, Danielle – and not to mention that anyone caught even thinking about looking at Blake always ends up with something unfortunate happening to them.

As Nicole learns the basics of being a witch, she also befriends Kate and Chris, who insist on helping her along with her training.  When it turns out that Nicole is a pretty fast learner, there are whispers that she is more powerful than she may know.  During a field trip to view Olympian Comet, Nicole is put into a group including herself, Kate, Chris, Blake, and Danielle – they are all supposed to connect hands and “meditate” on the comet as it passes.  But that happens next will change Nicole’s life even more radically – the five of them develop more advanced powers – the powers of the elements.  The powers are far from normal, and they take the 5 witches on an adventure of epic proportions – and they do things they never thought possible, especially seeing as they are now tasked with saving the world from the tear in the veil that holds the prison of Kerberous and they are responsible for its lock cracking and allowing the Titans to slowly escape.  With Nicole and Blake’s destinies truly tied together now, it’s getting harder and harder for them to deny the connection they feel – but with Danielle, Kate, and Chris’s destines also tied in, Nicole’s simple high school existence when from bad to worse as the group must fight to save not only themselves, but those they love – and quite possibly the world!

Nicole’s journey really blows off the pages from the very first page.  She is thrown into such an unknown world so quickly, she scarcely has time to rebound from her head reeling in the new information about her bloodlines.  And the fact that she finds love and a BFF…it’s like a dream come true for this newly minted witch.  The only problem was, HOW did she form those relationships so quickly – was it specifically because of the comet’s effects…or what it destine to happen…?  I’m truly hoping that we get some more answers in the next book – especially since I’m hopeful that Danielle will be able to find someone new so Nicole and Blake can explore their feelings further.  The story had a good flow and great characters – great development of both!  Looking forward to seeing what else is in store for the Elementals (as Chris so cleverly named them) in the next book.

by Michelle Madow
Release Date: January 26th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

Filled with magic, thrilling adventure, and sweet romance, Elementals is the first in a new series that fans of Percy Jackson and The Secret Circle will love!

When Nicole Cassidy moves from sunny Georgia to gloomy New England, the last thing she expects is to learn that her homeroom is a cover for a secret coven of witches. Even more surprisingly … she’s apparently a witch herself. Despite doubts about her newfound abilities, Nicole is welcomed into this ancient circle of witches and is bedazzled by their powers—and, to her dismay, by Blake—the school’s notorious bad-boy.

Girls who get close to Blake wind up hurt. His girlfriend Danielle will do anything to keep them away, even if she must resort to using dark magic. But the chemistry between Blake and Nicole is undeniable, and despite wanting to protect Nicole from Danielle’s wrath, he finds it impossible to keep his distance.

When the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky for the first time in three thousand years, Nicole, Blake, Danielle, and two others in their homeroom are gifted with mysterious powers. But the comet has another effect—it opens the portal to the prison world that has contained the Titans for centuries. After an ancient monster escapes and attacks Nicole and Blake, it’s up to them and the others to follow the clues from a cryptic prophecy so that they can save their town … and possibly the world.

“There’s a reason we’re required to take Greek mythology.” Blake scooted closer to me, as if about to tell me a secret, and I leaned forward in anticipation. “Did you know that we—meaning everyone in our homeroom—are descended from the Greek gods?”

I arched an eyebrow. “Like Zeus and all of them living in a castle on the clouds?” I asked.

“Exactly.” He smirked. “Except that they’re referred to as the Olympians, and they call their ‘castle in the clouds’ Mount Olympus.”

“So you’re saying that we’re gods?”

“We’re not gods.” He smiled and shook his head. “But we have ‘diluted god blood’ in us. It’s what gives us our powers.”

4 ½ stars!

When Lena Gracey welcomed Alex Reyes into her “home” – an old, abandoned gas station that she has made her own – she never thought how drastically he could really change her life.  To her, he was just another customer that needed to utilize her “Spark” – her ability to talk to the Dust and bend it to her will.  But seeing as Lena shouldn’t exist, she has to be careful about whom she welcomes into her home – and she should be extra careful of Alex.  Especially seeing as he is secretly an undercover agent from the city of Azcon – to the Council of Nine that oversees everything, even if it’s illegal or unlawful.  But seeing as she’s a woman, a Spark, and she’s been able to hide herself for the last twenty years, it’s about time for Lena’s number to be up – and Alex will be exactly the man to serve her with it.  Except Alex is not who he seems to be…while he works for the Councilor Three (who oversees the third district), he has also been working with a secret organization along with the School of Wards (where little Sparks come to learn how to use their big Sparks) to bring down the Council.  Alex and his counterpart Thomas don’t like how the Sparks are treated and how they are exploited for their abilities.  And they believe that Lena is the beginning of that change – but getting her to trust them is the tricky part.

However, when Lena ends up seeing how terrible the Council truly is, and upon their part in her mother’s death – right in front of her – she ends up with no choice but to trust the one person she was deceived by from the start, Agent Alex Reyes.  She knows that she has been discovered and rather than run and hid, Lena chooses to stay and fight – or rather to stay with Alex, Thomas, and their school, learning how to harness her gift and starts teaching some of the others how to do things they never dreamed of, such as healing injuries, causing momentary paralysis, and how to kill without touching a hair on their heads.  As her relationship with Alex reaching a pinnacle and pivotal point, just in time for a huge mission that will make or break their current agency, the two don’t know whether they should hold tight to each other or push each other as far away as possible.  But their decision could very well be the make or break it mark for their mission and their agency.

All I can say is BOOM – the Spark. Goes. Boom!  I LOVED how strong and intelligent Lena was – she was a power house from the first page.  And Alex is strong, smart, and he tries his best for his fellow Sparks.  He truly wants what is best for the Sparks, even if it means his life is on the line.  And when the two strong personalities come together, that Spark is bound to combust.  They have a common goal, a common thought process, and are perfect for each other, but just feel the need to continue to put others first, before their own feelings.  While some of the dialog was slightly confusing in some places (particularly where the characters are “talking to themselves”), I found the story completely interesting and I was totally engrossed from the beginning to the end.  I think the story was imaginative, creative, and a great example of a stellar sc-fi/ paranormal genre book.  I am looking forward to seeing what else is come in Lena and Alex’s “Spark” of a story!

For 18 year old Ember Pierce, coming back from the dead is not all it’s cracked up to be…while she’s happy to still be alive, her life is still not her own – a slave to the very people who tried to orchestrate her death in her last mission where she was set up.  For her partner Caden Hawthorne, he’s spent the last 10 months grieving what he thought was Ember’s death – and  bordering on reckless behavior since then.  But when she transports to him one day, his hope in being with her is renewed with a passion.  Being reunited, they realize that their original plan of escaping is their only chance to be together and rid of The Project once and for all.  With betrayal by a team member on their last mission still ever-present in Ember’s mind and Dane Richards still threatening their every move, Caden and Ember make a promise to each other to stay in it for the long haul – to never forget that they are never in it alone.

Reunited once again at the facility, Dane senses Ember’s unease with being back, and instead of placing her and Caden back into the field, they send them to the Montana facility – aka the breeding facility where they send the ex-teleporters with their pairs to create all sorts of new teleporter babies.  But Ember and Caden won’t accept that fate – they want to start a family on their own terms…after they have lived a few years and gotten used to each other first.  They refuse to do it under The Project’s ever watchful eye.  But as usual, Dane Richards and The Project are one step ahead of them…they think if they can get the Pair acclimated quickly to the Montana facility, they will fall into step and follow their “mission”.  Seeing as Ember is still randomly teleporting, even during the day, not just once during her sleep cycle – she’s in constant danger and would endanger Caden if they were to run.  With her still teleporting to Adrian Sumner, the son of the creator of the Project and its technology, she reaches out to him for help.  He reluctantly agrees, but when time runs out and the pair is moved to the Montana baby-facility, Ember is forced to really rely on Adrian – even when Caden expresses his fears that Adrian isn’t a good guy.  But considering the options, Adrian is the better of the two evils Ember and Caden are faced with.  When they finally get the chance to run, they make a resolve to stay by each other’s sides, no matter what – but with the obstacles still popping up at every turn, can they truly trust anyone accept each other?  Will they get the freedom they so adamantly crave worth all the risks – even each other?

I am still amazed at the strength and intelligence that Ember exhibits!  She stays true to herself, and eventually Caden – even when she tries to part ways with him for his own safety.  Her reasons are selfless and right.  While this story had quite a bit more “running” and teleporting, the first book gained a half a star more from me only because I really enjoyed seeing Ember and Caden’s relationship coming together, the slow burn they had for each other.  While it’s still there – without a doubt – they didn’t get much of a chance to really grow as a couple, partly because of Caden thinking Ember is dead and partly due to all the running from the Project.  I still LOVED the story – and cannot wait to see what happens next…serious cliffhanger ending!  Naughty, naughty Ms. Thalassa!
