Teaser of The Angel Knights (Book 1) by Mary Ting:

“Why, look here, Michael. I caught me another dove.” The Fallen grinned triumphantly. “Won’t the master be proud of me that I’ve killed two more?” His tongue glided across his lips at the same time he caressed my face. I grimaced and jerked my head away. “This one is beautiful. I think I’ll have my way with her and then rip out her heart.” He leaned into me, pressing his face to my hair, and touched my cheek with his. I wanted to throw up.

I shivered, mentally blocking out the vision of his words from my mind. Fear would not take me. I had created my situation and it was up to me to get out of it. Knowing I had backup, my courage grew. The Fallen pierced his dark, devious eyes into mine as if he could reach inside my soul. His brows were thick, nose sharp, and his lips so thin they were hardly there. His ghostly pale skin revealed a long scar running from his temple to his chin on his left cheek.

“Please, let her go. You have me,” I stammered.

“Oh, this one is so brave. What a great combination. Maybe I’ll brainwash her and train her to be on our side.” He hissed at me, showing me all of his abnormally sharp teeth. They appeared as if he’d purposely sharpened them.

My team had gotten closer, but where were Uncle Davin and Zach? Knowing we were outnumbered three to one didn’t give me much hope, but I had to remind myself we were stronger than we thought. Father and Uncle Davin were with us, the greatest demon hunters of their time.

“I’m giving you one last warning,” Father stated with authority.

The Fallen laughed again, mocking Father. “You’re giving me a warning? Let me tell you my name so everyone will remember it when they die. I’m called Mortem…meaning death.” Trailing the dagger down Victoria’s neck, he nicked it. Crimson liquid seeped from the wound, creating a red line down the front of her. “Beautiful. I love this color. I can’t wait to see more of it…on her.” Then, with a wicked grin, he plunged the sword into Victoria’s heart.

About Prophecy Girl (Angel Academy, #1):

Amelie Bennett: Ending the world, one prophecy at a time.

I was born to slay Crossworld demons.

Big black flappy ones, little green squirmy ones. Unfortunately, the only thing getting slain these days is my social life. With my high school under attack, combat classes intensifying, and Academy instructors dropping right and left, I can barely get my homework done, let alone score a bondmate before prom.

Then he shows up.

Jackson Smith-Hailey. Unspeakably hot, hopelessly unattainable, and dangerous in all the right ways. Sure, he’s my trainer. And okay, maybe he hates me. Doesn’t mean I’ll ignore the wicked Guardian chemistry between us. It’s crazy! Every time I’m with him, my powers explode. Awesome, right?

Now my teachers think I’m the murderous Graymason destined to bring down our whole race of angelbloods. Everyone in New Orleans is hunting me. The people I trusted want me dead. Jack and I have five days to solve the murders, prevent a vampire uprising, and thwart the pesky prophecy foretelling his death by my hand. Shouldn’t be too difficult.

Getting it done without falling in love? That might take a miracle.

3 ½ stars

Life for 18 year old Lila Kingston has been far from happy…while her family may have a lot of money, it certainly hasn’t bought happiness for her or her little sister Hayley.  Raised by maids and nannies, the sisters have always know they may not have their parents around very often, they would always have each other.  At the prestigious top school of Eden College, Lila is constantly harassed by the “popular kids”, but she is satisfied with just getting through high school and go to a local college to stay near her sister while she finishes school.  However, when Lila’s success-driven parents insist that she fit into the mold they want her in, she rebels and pushes her parents even further away.  And when Lila begins having weird yet wonderfully haunting dreams of a beautiful angel whom she is vaguely able to communicate with, she begins thinking she is crazy – that is until he walks into her class, as real as the nose on her face.

With the strange and sudden appearance of James – the angel/ boy from Lila’s dreams – she is unexpectedly drawn to him.  And bizarre things start happening to Lila now that James has mysteriously emerged from her dreams to her real life – like seeing beautiful lights that no one else can see, sudden bouts of lightening out of the blue, and finding out that not only are angels real, but so are demons.  And when James reveals himself to Lila and they begin developing feelings for each other, the two must keep their love a secret – or face the consequences that knowing the future can hold.  While James and Lila’s world continues to be flipped upside down, the demons are clandestinely showing up to destroy them and everything they care for…their forbidden love included.

Let me start by saying that sci-fi and ya are two of my favorite combinations.  Add in a good forbidden love for good measure, and it’s should add up to the right number.  Unfortunately, this story – while enjoyable – fell flat in some areas for me.  The dialog and conversations were a little stale and at times difficult to follow.  I adored the story of James and Lila, but never felt like there was a “why” with regards to their connection or even why James came into Lila’s life.  I loved the cliffhanger ending – while they infuriate me, they also tend to peak my interest into the next book in the series.

3 ½ stars!

When Josh saved Grace’s life and was given another chance at a better afterlife, with Grace at his side in Heaven. They are finally in each other’s arms, but Grace is having trouble adjusting to her new found happiness – worrying that she doesn’t deserve to be so happy when her family is still in such turmoil over her loss. And when her and Josh are put back on Anti-Christ lookout duty, Grace can only think of her family – her little brother Noah who seems to be headed down the path that Josh was once on, straight to the Boss himself. With Keira now battling for Noah’s soul and the Boss trying to distract Grace and Josh from the next Anti-Christ, the two heavenly beings start to feel the strain on their relationship.

And now that Josh has made a deal with the Boss once more, in an attempt to keep Grace out of harm’s way and save Noah from a terrible decision, Josh is forced to pretend he no longer loves Grace – which breaks her further, but also helps her pull herself together and realize what she wants and how she needs to get it. The only problem with Grace’s problems is everything – Noah may have already lost a losing battle, Josh might be heading back “downstairs”, and Grace could lose everything she ever loved. It’s a battle of good, evil, and the power of love.

I really enjoyed this book – it left right where the last left off, but with Grace’s guilt overwhelming her to the point of affecting everything from her “job” to her relationships. Josh’s all consuming love for Grace should be enough, but you can feel that there is something between them almost from the first page. I definitely thought there could have been a little more insight into Grace’s thoughts for her actions – I was left feeling a little confused and bummed (no spoilers though!). I am hoping that the final book in the series will answer all those burning questions I at least was left with…good middle, but certainly expecting something big for the next book!

Unforgiven: A Soulkeepers Novel (The Soulkeepers Book 3) by Lori Adams

**I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review**

5+ stars!

When Sophia St. James drove into the town of Haven Hurst, Connecticut for the first time, she knows that she is meant for something bigger.  Of course, seeing an otherwise invisible Michael Patronus and his family tending to people on a spiritual level that have been involved in a car crash, that helped push her over the precipice of believing in the unbelievable.   Now, she is a Spirit Walker, in a secret love with Michael – who is a Guardian turned Halo warrior, and she’s also in a whole heap of trouble.  To concentrate on her Spirit Walker training, Sophia found an ancient spell that could split herself in two, or create a twin of sorts, whom she refers to as Ka.  The only problem is that the Demon Knight Dante Dannoso has managed to convince Ka, who he thinks in the real Sophia, to descend into Hell with him – which he revels in bringing what he believes is an unawakened Spirit Walker to Hell where they can use her powerful Chelsea Light for evil instead of good.  In the meantime, the real Sophia feels the moment when her other half descends…her soul Taken to the depths of Hell.  In a moment, Sophia feels everything she’s worked for breaking apart – she is forced to lie to Michael and his family, her Ascended Master Rama, and her father.  Seeing as Rama was a part of her soul splitting trick, he guesses at what has happened, but she is still left in a seemingly impossible situation – needing to go into Hell to collect Ka and her soul, but having no way to do it without facing certain death.  When the truth is a life or death decision, and people you thought you could trust turn out to be someone else all together – will love be enough to put Sophia back together?

I am in true awe of Ms. Adams and The Soulkeepers book series.  Some may think it just another “angels and demons” story, but it so much more!  It’s about loving and trusting, living and being content…most of all, it’s about the power of true love what can be accomplished is only you believe in it.  Seeing all the rise and falls between every single relationship in the story was amazing and complex – they change so often, sometimes I had to stop in admiration of how Ms. Adams was able to direct so many emotions in so many directions in so few pages.  Her talent for writing about the true meaning of love – willing to risk your own life to save those you love – really shows true and hits the mark.  This was an amazing end to an amazing series – I’m sad to see the end, but so pleased to have gotten to be on this awesome roller coaster of a series.

Interview with Lori Adams

1.) What made you want to become a writer?

I had a very active imagination as a child so I guess it began there. I loved to read! I was the kid with the flashlight under the covers, reading until I fell asleep because I had to know if things ended the way I thought they should. With the help of National Geographic Magazines and a pair of scissors, I ‘put together’ my first book when I was eight-years-old. It was about sharks, something I was fearfully obsessed with at the time.
In my early twenties I began writing down stories for fun, and continued off and on as I moved around (a lot) and went to college. I was a stay-at-home mom (feeling restless and a little bored) when I woke up one night with a startling voice in my head. “You’re supposed to be writing” it said. I sat straight up in bed, my heart hammering. Somehow, I had forgotten. After that, everything made sense. The library became my second home and I taught myself how to write.

2.) Have you based any characters off real people?

I have not based any one character off a real person, but I know there are bits and pieces of people (real or fictional) in my characters. In my teens, I was adventurous like Sophia—loved to explore, and determined to understand things, etc. Looking back, I realize that I subconsciously put a lot of my husband in Michael: his strength and protectiveness. His pride in my success. Not to mention that my husband was very tan with white-blonde hair when we first met—a child of summer.
As for Dante, our tortured Italian lover, I can honestly say I don’t know anyone so devastated by love as he is. It makes my heart ache just thinking about him.

3.) How do you come up with the character’s names?

I have always loved the name, Sophia. It is soft but strong and it was my first and only choice for her. Michael was named after the Archangel so that was a no-brainer. Dante, I chose for two reasons. I’ve always liked the name and knew I’d use it one day. Also, I liked the idea of my main demon knight sharing the name of Italy’s il somma poeta, supreme poet, Dante Alighieri. Demon Knight Dante’s last name (Dannoso) I selected for its’ meaning: evil and mischievous, among other things.

4.) What book made the strongest impression on you as a child?

Gosh, there were so many . . . how to choose? I was a tomboy who loved animal stories like “Black Beauty”, “The Black Stallion”, and “Call of the Wild”. Later,I was obsessed with the “Hardy Boys” and “Nancy Drew”, which sparked my love for mysteries. But I guess the book that made the strongest impression was “Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret” by the amazing Judy Bloom. It was the first book that was about a ‘real life’ character that I identified with. It was strangely wonderful to read about someone just like me. Especially at that age. Margaret and her life seemed so real, so different than other characters I’d experienced in books. It is still a favorite of mine, which is a great testament to the power of Ms. Bloom’s storytelling.

5.) What is one thing about you that would surprise your readers?

Oddly enough, I can’t snack on anything crunchy when I’m writing. The loud noise is so distracting! Thank God chocolate is soft 🙂

6.) What was your favorite genre to read as a teenager?

I actually started reading romance novels very early as a teen, thanks to my mom. She is a voracious reader and reads faster than anyone I know! We always had stacks of books around the house, and I had my choice. It was like living in a library. *sighs dreamily* My first love was the historicals, which bloomed into my passion for history.

7.) What’s your favorite snack food when you’re writing?

I love tea and toast!

8.) Do you have a favorite place to write?

I love to write in my office/bedroom. It’s plenty big and holds the writing desk that I designed and my husband made. I have a lovely view of the backyard and can hear water trickling in the pond.

9.) Do you have favorite music to listen to when you write?

Music is really important to me as a writer. For background music, I listen to Zen or New Age. When I’m in a zone, I don’t hear it anymore. For inspiration, I have a playlist of songs that coincides with the book or scene I’m working on. When I need a break, I’ll take a walk and listen to the playlist and get my juices going again.

10.) What is one piece of advice you would like to give aspiring authors?

If you don’t take your writing seriously, no one else will either. Write like it’s a career, not a hobby.

Don’t forget to check back in tomorrow for my review of Unforgiven!

Awaken: The Soulkeepers by Lori Adams

Awaken: The Soulkeepers by Lori Adams

**I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review**

When Sophia St. James survived the kiss of death from the charming Demon Knight, Dante, she thought that she was done with Hell and it’s demons – and that she could move on with her training as a spirit walker…that and she was finally free to love the gorgeous angel Michael Patronus.  Of course, they have to keep their love a secret as an angel isn’t supposed to have a relationship with a human…EVER!  But with Sophia’s Dad slowly getting back to normal after his brush with the demons, she is just ready to move on with her life.

Michael is in love…and he’s finally seeing his love for Sophia not as a weakness, but as a focal point to concentrate on their love – especially as he is FINALLY selected to begin the trials for the Halos of the Son, and elite team of angelic warriors.  Sophia is his center and their love is the one thing he can count on without a shadow of a doubt…that is until she begins training as a spirit walker, which Michael is immensely against due to the danger she would encounter.

And in the depths of Hell’s Death Bunker, Dante is facing great pain and suffering for his deception when he was in Haven Hurst…for his intent to bring Sophia back to hell instead of her father, whom he had a death contract on.  He still believes that Sophia contains the spirit of his true love from many lifetimes ago, and he promised her he’d come back for her.  Of course she can’t remember any of it.  But when he gets a chance to sneak out of hell and his daily torture, he jumps at the opportunity to see Sophia again and try to convince her she really does love him.  He needs her in hell with him…

While the first chapter sort of lagged a little bit, as soon as I got going with the rest of book, I couldn’t put it down!  The love that Sophia and Michael have is just so passionate – and while they aren’t supposed to be together, there is something about a forbidden love that makes it that much better.  But add in the inevitable and dreaded love triangle once Dante makes his way back from hell to claim what he feels is rightfully his…and fireworks is an understatement.  I love that Sophia feels a strong conviction for what she feels she is supposed to do with her life in becoming a spirit walker, even when Michael and a lot of others caution her of its dangers.  She is strong and committed, which makes her a great leading lady.

Now, please be warned…MAJOR cliff hanger at the end of this book – I think I almost yelled out loud in protest!  I cannot WAIT to see what the conclusion of the series brings…if it’s anything like the first two, be prepared for twists, turns, and lots and lots of steaminess!

(This is book 2 in the 3 book series.)
