Teaser of The Chosen Knights (Book 2) by Mary Ting:

Eli willed his sword away. It disappeared behind his back, just the way I would have done it. “You know nothing. Nothing about me is human. I won’t be a part of something that could kill any one of you.”

“How could it kill us if—?” Then I had a thought, recalling the first time I’d seen him in the cafeteria. I had no evidence but it was worth the shot. “You can astral travel, can’t you? You’ve done it before, when you first saw me in the cafeteria. You can travel in the present too. That’s why you took off.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Do you even know what that is?” His jaw clenched.

I knew he was lying. “Out-of-body experience.” I followed behind him when he started walking away.

“You have no idea of the consequences when you travel. Astral travel.”

“Then let it be my consequence.”

Eli whipped around. His face was just a breath away from mine. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Then show me.”

Eli pierced his eyes into mine. His heart drummed a mile a minute. “You want to feel pain, Lucia? You want to know what happens to people when they astral travel?”

“I-I—” I didn’t know what to say. I certainly didn’t expect him to say the things he did.

Eli extended his arm to me. “Take my hand.”

“Take my hand, Lucia.” His tone was stern.

I shook my head.

“Last warning.”

“Last warning for—ELI.” I screamed. My stomach dropped, along with my body. Eli’s arms embraced me as we plunged through multiple layers of clouds with my back facing down. Hair whipped my face and the force of gravity made me dizzy.

“You didn’t heed my warning, Lucia,” Eli grumbled.

“So you’re trying to kill me?” The normal reaction for someone in this situation would be to fight back, but my instincts told me I wasn’t in danger. “What are you doing?” The clouds got smaller as we plummeted faster by the second. I began to have second thoughts. Wanting to believe so badly I could get through to him, I’d let it possibly cost my life.

He ignored my plea. Looking squarely in my eyes as air rushed against us, he said nonchalantly, “Get ready to die.”

My Review of The Chosen Knights (Book 2) by Mary Ting

**I received an ARC of this book from in exchange for my honest review**

4 stars

What could be more difficult than being a high school senior that’s new in town?  For Lucia and Zach, twins in a small Hawaii community, being half-angel and half-humans that have never lived among the human world – and oh yeah, being Venators that fight demons that want to take over the earth…might just add a whole new aspect to high school life!  Together with their “Uncle” Davin, the three embark on a journey from the safety of their angel community called Crossroads to go undercover to find out why teens keep going missing on Earth to a small island in Hawaii.  But as Lucia and her brother have never lived among “regular” teens before, there is an even bigger learning curve – one that ends up leading them to meet several “good” demons (who knew demons could be good, huh?).  Abel, Vanessa, Brody, Milani, and Eli all coming crashing into their lives, all demons of different varieties – as well as Jack, their quirky and slightly geeky human next door neighbor.  As Jack’s friendship with Lucia grows, he begins telling her and Zach about the Knights Templar, who were tasked with keeping sacred treasures safe from evil, and how his family had a descendant who was one of the original Knights.  Once Lucia and Zach bring the information to Uncle Davin, things really get interesting – especially seeing as Friday the thirteenth was coming up, and it’s the day the teens went missing, as well as other various superstitions hinge on.

When the trio begins digging into the information, they end up finding out a whole lot more than they bargained for – not only is the demon lord named Cyrus involved, but he’s the one who originally began looking for the treasures from the Knights Templar and gave Jack’s descendant Jacques in the 1800s the ultimatum of giving him the treasure, or dying.   Now with fights against Possessor demons becoming a daily struggle, along with a book that was handed down through Jack’s family, they find out that seven Knights are required to be chosen – one of which needs to be someone from the Molay family lines (Jack), and another that can astral travel or have “out of body” experiences in the past and present, which ends up being Eli.  He is mysterious and mystifying to Lucia – like a puzzle box she wants to solve…and while their relationship begins on sarcasm and ambiguity, somewhere in the middle they become infatuated with each other.  And while they both know it can never work and isn’t allowed, seeing as Eli is a demon and Lucia has angel blood, the illicit relationship blooms into something dangerous.  So when a deal between Cyrus and Eli goes horribly wrong, instead of seeing Lucia or the others get hurt, he gives himself over to Cyrus in return – but with one of the magical treasures of the Knights, the true-cross dagger, which inflicts pain but no death and freezes it’s victim in place, in his chest.  With a broken heart, but not a broken spirit, Lucia and the others vow to get Eli back from Cyrus and rid the world of his evil.  The only question is, are they strong enough to conquer that kind of wickedness?

When I first began this book, I didn’t think I would end up enjoying it as much as I did.  I read the prequel, The Angel Knights, that explained the angel’s backgrounds – and why they do what they do, but it wasn’t until about 1/3 of the way through this book that my opinion was quickly swayed back to true enjoyment.  I loved that Lucia and Zach were clueless when it came to the “real world” – that they’d never lived here before and therefore knew little about what to expect.  And seeing the relationships that are built between the angels and “good” demons was another side of the “typical angel story” that was new and enjoyable.  Of course I can never pass up a good romance that breaks all the rules – Eli and Lucia take it to a whole new level.  I can’t wait to see what is up next for them!

Check out the entire Angel Knights series!
